The short version
You can browse Shipshe without telling us who you are. If you create an account, we keep your email address, what you told us when you signed up, and the patches you earn. We use Google Analytics to see how the site is used.
What we collect
Shipshe uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages people use. Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser and sends information about your visit to Google: the pages you view, your browser and device, and roughly where you are, worked out from your IP address. We do not run advertising.
You can block or delete these cookies in your browser's settings, or turn Google Analytics off for every site with Google's opt-out add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
Our web host, Vercel, keeps ordinary request logs to run the site: the address your phone or computer connects from (its IP address), the kind of browser, and the page asked for. We do not use those logs to find out who you are.
Accounts
You do not need an account to browse. If you create one, we keep your email address, your password, and whether you said you are visiting or own a business here. The password is stored scrambled, so nobody can read it, us included.
We use your email address to confirm your account and, if you ask, to send you a link to reset your password. If you said you own a business, we will also send you one email when owners can claim their listings.
If you are signed in, the patches you earn and your game progress are saved with your account, so they follow you from one device to another.
Your account is held by Supabase, the company that runs our database, and our emails are delivered by Resend. They handle your details only to do that work for us. We do not sell your details, use them for advertising, or give them to anyone else.
When you sign up, log in, claim a listing or send us a form, a check run by Cloudflare makes sure you are a person and not a program. To do that, Cloudflare sees your IP address and some details of your browser.
If you sign in with Google, Google gives us your email address, your name and your profile picture. We use the email address for your account and do not show or use the rest.
Signing in sets a cookie in your browser that keeps you signed in on that device. Logging out removes it.
You can delete your account yourself from the Me tab. Deleting it removes your email address, your password, your sign-up choice, your saved patches and game progress, and any claims you made from our records. If you were the only manager of a listing, it goes back to unclaimed. If you cannot sign in, write to hello@shipshe.app and we will delete it for you.
Claiming a listing
If you claim a listing, we keep your name, your role at the business, your phone number and the business email address you gave. Only we see them. We use them to confirm the claim, which can mean calling the business or emailing a code to the address on its listing.
When we email a code to a business, the email says who asked and their role, so the business knows.
If your claim is approved, your account is recorded as a manager of that listing. The listing itself does not show who manages it.
A claim we do not approve is deleted after 12 months. We keep a record of each email we send about a claim: what kind it was and the address it went to, not what it said.
If you tell us about a business that is not listed, we keep what you enter so we can add it and write back to you.
The places we list
The listings describe businesses and attractions, gathered from public sources such as their own websites. We do not publish the names of business owners, and for places that are private homes we show the town only.
Links to other sites
When you follow a link to a business's website, that site's own privacy rules apply. The links at the bottom of every page to our sister sites carry a short tag in the web address that tells those sites the visit came from Shipshe. The tag says nothing about you.
The map, when it comes
A map is planned. Its map pictures will come from a company called Mapbox, which will see your IP address and the part of the map you look at. We will update this page before the map goes live.
