Hezekiah Davis died on September 26, 1891. By Ford's account he had organized a private bank in Shipshewana and was its president until he died; Ford gives its first year as 1889 in one volume and 1890 in the other.
In 1893 Sarah became its president. Ford's biography of their youngest son, Hewlitt, says he joined her that year as cashier and that it stayed that way until October 1907: fourteen years. The 1893 atlas names her president too, and gives the cashier as Francis H. Halbert. The books do not agree on who kept the cash.
Conspicuous is the three-story brick "Davis Hall," in which is situated the Shipshewana Bank, established by Hezekiah Davis, of which Sarah R. Davis is now president, and Francis H. Halbert, cashier.
The same atlas gave the family a plate: an oval portrait of him captioned H. Davis (Deceased), one of her captioned Mrs. Sarah R. Davis, and between them the bank building and hotel, captioned as the late Hezekiah Davis's. Its sketch of him calls her a worthy companion, who survives.
On October 15, 1907, Hewlitt organized the Farmers State Bank of Shipshewana and made himself its president. Ford calls it the direct successor of the old Bank of Shipshewana, a private concern owned by Hewlitt and his mother.
